In Nigeria, spanking has become the only option to disciplining children when they misbehave, but in developed countries spanking is seen as a crime. Child rights lawyers and activists have been campaigning for the stop spanking as a way of discipline for kids. The real question now is; Should Nigerian Parents Stop Beating Their Children?

Beating a child has it advantages and its shortcomings but ultimately, there has to be a balance between discipline and physical abuse.

Some school of thought say that spanking should only be done as a last resort when all other methods of discipline fail and the spank should not be too long, to violent, or too hard; just enough to get the message across. Any more than that and you will be teaching your child to fear you instead of respect you; a simple spanking instills respect while a senseless beating will instill fear, resentment, and hatred.

As a child that grew up here in Nigeria, I was spanked severely so much that I questioned my origin but one thing was certain from all the spanking I got, it kind of gave me a clear direction of what to do and when to do it. It was a constant reminder that my parents never wanted me to be influenced by what I saw on the street or on TV. So I am safe to say spanking helped me!

Kids

In recent times, spanking of kids has gone into another level, as it was in the news that a mum stripped her son naked and gave him a beat of his life for stealing her money. We’ve also heard cases of parents beating their kids to a pulp because they believe the kid is a witch. All these are reasons Child Rights activist and Lawyers are considering putting a stop to it by making it a crime to beat kids.

Join in the conversation and let us know if Nigerian Parents Should Stop Beating Their Kids.

Cheers!
